First Name: Maya
Our home in Kalamazoo is located on a four-laned avenue, lined with the grandest of deciduous trees. In the summer, their rich green leaves canopy over the busy road and cool us off from July’s heat. Inspired by it all, I decided to plant our own tree.
Scouting our home’s property, we chose a place with the right mix of shade and well-drained soil. A friendly phone call to Kalamazoo Tree Service (on Saratoga Avenue, if anyone’s interested) helped us determine the right species. Rather than picking another deciduous, we ended up going green – evergreen that is, opting for a White Pine, Michigan’s state tree! In addition to eventually reducing our summer air conditioning costs, we were surprised to learn that the latest edition to our family would also help save money in winter, blocking our home from fierce winter winds that are all too common across the Lower Peninsula.
It’ll be years before it’s as towering as her deciduous friends, but according to my daughter, our lovely little pine is ready for Christmas lights.
